About J.

J. is a medical officer who graduated from the main university on the sunny tropical island of Singapore. True to his country of birth, he’s grown up to be effectively bilingual (English and Mandarin) despite a future career that also demands competence in Hokkien, Cantonese and Bahasa Melayu. He hopes to be able to cut people up (and save lives!) in the future.

Views on Food
Food falls into two categories: nourishment and enjoyment. For nourishment, J. eats healthily (think yong tau foo and vegetables) but what he really, really lives for is good food.
Coffee is drunk for the taste, not for the caffeine. Dark chocolate is heavenly and white chocolate is a misnomer. People who drink beer just to get pissed are wasteful, both of the beer and of their health.

Views on books
Life is too short to read lousy books. And any book worth reading is worth reading well, the words to be rolled about the tongue, the imagery to be savoured, the thoughts to be pondered slowly.

Views on sports
J. thinks that professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fights are definitely much higher on the awesome scale than professional wrestling (yawn). Basketball’s fun too, and F1 racing can be entertaining to watch.

    Hey J,

I read your blog from February 14th on Multi Level Marketing. Couldn’t agree with you more. I work for the director of “Believe”. Believe is a comedy/mockumentary about Multi Level Marketing done in the style of Christopher Guest films. There is already a cult following of the movie and it hasn’t even come out yet.

    Here is the site:

Watch the videos on the site, they are very funny. If you are interested in learning more about it or blogging about it, send me an e-mail and I can get you in contact with Loki Mulholland the director

Thanks again for the great blog!

    Hello J,
I found your blog comparing the SGH and TTSH very helpful and insightful. I am a foreign trained doctor from Canada who may be interning in Singapore in September. Considering that I do not know any other House Officers in I am very thankful to have found your blog.
In fact, I was wondering, if you’ve gained some any additional insights about these hospitals or have any comments about other hospitals such as AH, CGH, KKH or NUH. I have to send in my choice of postings in Medicine, Gen Surg, and Obs&Gyn and feel terribly disadvangtaged because I do not know the pros and cons of these hospitals. Do you know of any other resources that I could access for this information? It would be very much appreciated.

    • Hello richard sorry that I did not see your message earlier as my blog had been on hiatus for an extended period of time (the last post being in February 2009). I’m assuming it’s a bit too late now as you would already have picked your postings and started work by now. Hope that it’s all worked out for you and you’re learning a lot regardless of where you’re working. Cheers.

    Hi J,

I came across your blog while looking for information about MBBS exam. I didn’t study in Singapore, but want to join the Residency program there. To qualify, i need to past QE, which is in format of MBBS exam of local med schools. I’m absolutely clueless regarding format and content of exam and don’t seem to find anything online. I would really appreciate if you could share any experience. How do students prepare for it? are there any study materials available? Whats the exam like?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

  7. Hi J,

Do you have any tips for life in M2? How soon should we know how to do all the physical examinations? I realise there are some lectures and tutorials that are worth going for while some are not…so how do I know?

    Thanks.

    Hello J,

I would just like to ask, how’s the life of a doctor in Singapore like? Some say it is very very busy…that you do not have time for yourself. Nevertheless I can’t help being encouraged by the fact that it is possible to manage a blog on top of your duties. Is the life of a doctor as hectic as they say? Or is it possible to manage your time in a way that you do get some rest too? Thank you for your attention in advance!

    Hey J,

I chanced upon your blog whilst searching for some insights on stethoscopes. Starting M1 next year. Anyways after just reading 2 posts, I’ve been thoroughly enlightened and entertained at the same time.
Thanks for having such an awesome blog.
And yes white chocolates are indeed a misnomer. Haha.
    Happy holidays!
    Cheers,
    Vic
