First 2008 Practicality Post

Happy New Year! (Yes, it’s about one week since New Year’s Day.)

Apologies for the lack of updates. Things have been busy, and the stress of studying for the MBBS is starting to get to us. 63 days to MBBS, give or take a couple of days (it doesn’t matter if it’s 64 or 62 or 63 days, alright? Give it a rest.) Otherwise, the holiday period has been pretty good.

Things aren’t looking too hot this coming year.

We were greeted by rising oil prices that briefing touched the US$100 mark. Remember the days when oil was $40 and people thought that US$60 would be crazy? Taxi fares went bonkers, courtesy of taxi firms that couldn’t be bothered to lower rental fares despite record profits (well, it’s true, their obligation is to their shareholders, to maximise profits).

Property prices are going crazy. 1,100 people applied for 714 condo-like Boon Keng flats going for between S$349,000 and S$727,000. Perhaps in the future when I start working, I’ll be able to afford a non-condo-like flat? Perhaps we can look at good ol’ healthcare professionals’ pay.

The politicians at the top of the food chain got a huge pay rise. Again. Professionals such as lawyers got up to 7 months bonus, while poor old doctors (who had to spend $18,000 a year for their degree) got about 1.7 months bonus. No wait! There’s light at the end of the tunnel. NHG has decided to raise HO’s pays by $200. Nice.

And now I’m really feeling the stress. If I fail my MBBS, I’ll have to do another 6 months and that’ll cost me $9000! The horror!

Looks like it’s time to get back to work.

Have a great 2008!

  1. gotta add in (monthhly HO pay x 6) to the potential monetary losses if you don’t pass MBBS on the first try.
