Review: Mythic Grill (in London, ON)

Tired of eating at home, two brothers decided to go out for dinner. Looking up Restaurantica, they decided on Mythic Grill, ranked 9.3 based on 35 reviews. Most of the other highly ranked restaurants were based on 1-4 reviews, so the brothers were fairly certain Mythic Grill would turn out to be good.

The place is located near Victoria Park, looks like it was set up in what’s previously a residence. There’s plenty of parking along Albert Street. The sign “Mythic Grill” was prominent above the entrance. It’s a cozy place with a charming ambience. The entrance had a bar that was stacked with bottles of wine. The service staff was helpful but not ostentatious.

On to the food.

The meal started with a complimentary basket of bread. It was normal bread and was served with butter. The iced water came with a slice of lemon. For an appetizer, there was an order of calamari. Unlike calamari in most places, this calamari was thick and only thinkly breaded, served with a slice of lemon and that white sauce whose name is forgotten. It was pretty good, chewy and tasty but not too oily or salty (a common mistake for most calamari dishes).

For meals, the two brothers ordered a souvlaki each, one of pork and the other of beef. Each was served with potatoes, pita bread, potatoes and vegetables.

Beef Souvlaki (CA$15.50)

Both were good but the general consensus was that the beef skewers were tastier than the pork ones. They were just rare enough in the centre to be juicy and tender. The sides were pretty good too. With the bill came a few Krinos Ouzo Greek sweets.

Yup, in general the place lived up to its reputation. Next time, maybe they’ll try the dessert: baklava with ice cream (CA$5.50).
