Farewell Party for [/on] the Library

The Medical Library of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine is due to be demolished to make way for a bigger, better building. Something to do with research and whatnot, things that seem remote to the typical medical student who mourns the death of an old friend – the, ahem, comfortable place where he has spend hours mugging, ordering in pizza to boost his morale, playing cards to defuse boredom, and prayed in the mornings for strength.

Whilst studying for the Pathology Examination, J. and JeT had an idea while exploring the building… and when they ended up on the roof of the medical library.

“Wow, we can actually walk around the rooftop and have a great view of NUH, the COFM department, and so on.”

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“We should play daidee and the loser walks on the parapet?”

“No, you idiot!” -bonk- “We should have a barbeque here after our pathology exams!”

So they did.

JeT brought vodka, charcoal, firestarters and a portable barbeque pit. J. brought a small camping light cum radio. QiC provided the ride and a lighter. QiC drove to Clementi where they invested in some easy-to-bbq items like onion rings, hot dogs, chicken nuggets and most importantly, marshmallows! Half an hour was spent strolling about Clementi looking for a shop that would sell sparklers.

On their return, J. and JeT moved things to the roof and prepared things. They stacked up the charcoal into neat little stacks and J. proceeded to strategically place firestarts in the middle of these stacks. It would take some time for the charcoal to heat up sufficiently. As it turned out, the timing was just right because none of the guests were less than 40min late.

Eventually, people showed up. One person slipped and fell down in a puddle. JeT ordered in pizza to supplement the meagre quantity of food. Everyone started taking photographs on the roof until it was too dark to do anything but eat and chat.

Some days later, many of the M4s would leave for their overseas electives, blissfully absent from the destruction that was wrought upon the old library.

Good bye, medical library.
