Review: X-O Bak Chor Mee

Bak chor mee = Minced meat noodles. It’s Hokkien. Usually it’s made with flat noodles tossed with oil and chili, with a generous dose of minced pork, sliced pork, liver and mushrooms with a slice of lettuce.

Now, we’ve all heard of XO fish beehoon (such as at Buona Vista) or XO crab beehoon… but XO bak chor mee?

At No. 10 Newton Food Centre, that was exactly what J. found. Intrigued, he ordered it.

XO Bak Chor Mee
XO Bak Chor Mee ($3.50)

It’s overrated.

$3.50 can get you mega-portions of much better bak chor mee such as the one at Chinatown market (currently temporarily located opposite Singapore General Hospital).

Price aside (after all, it is located at Newton Food Centre), the bak chor mee hardly matches up to other famous stalls around Singapore. What’s more, the stall proudly displays the endorsement by Coffee Talk and Hawker Woks with pictures of Fiona Xie. After tasting the food, J. can only ask, Fiona, what are you thinking? Have you eaten good bak chor mee before?”

Let’s start with the soup. It was insipid and bland. J. likes to slurp up a good soup with his noodles, but ended up leaving 95% of this bowl. The noodles were undercooked and tough. The other ingredients… so-so. The chili wasn’t flavourful enough.

Where was the XO? Maybe there was a slight whiff of it as J. mixed up the noodles. Maybe.

J.’s verdict>: Don’t bother with this gimmicky dish.
