Driving After a Hiatus

It’s been over a month since J. last sat at the wheels of a mechanical beast of destruction and pretty-fast-transportation.

At the first opportunity, J. pounced on it faster than a cat pounces on a rat.

There were the initial jitters, reminiscent of the first few months J. crossed the road after the accident. It wasn’t so much fear, but instead a state of alertness. The “new car” smell, the glowing instrument panel, the feel of the weight beneath the steering wheel, the excitement of being in control of a vehicle once more… it was exhilarating.

It reminded J. of two times before.

The first, after he had obtained his driving license at the age of 18 and was driving under the watchful eyes of his parents.

The second, when the smaller car transformed (under the influence of money) to a bigger car. It required an adjustment in the situational sense of the driver (i.e. J.). There was that sense of nervousness, especially when parallel parking… which eventually gave way to the natural brashness of J.

Driving a car is a wee bit like riding a bicycle. You never really forget. And thus it was that J. cruised along comfortably along the arterial roads of Singapore… all the way home.
